While the Old Lahaina Luau is incredible, there are many other options for you to conisder.

Go Whale Watching
Every year, Humpback Whales migrate from Alaska to mate and give birth in the warm shallow waters of Maui.
If you can visit Maui between January and March, you NEED to go whale watching!
You may see whales off in the distance from shore, but the best way to see them up close is on a whale-watching tour.
Our favorite whale-watching tour on Maui allowed us to listen to whales sing using underwater hydrophones.
Top Whale-Watching Tours
- Lahaina: Whale Watching Lahaina Harbor (temporarily closed due to fire)
- Ka’anapali Beach: Whale Watching Cruise with Open Bar

Whatever your wellness journey entails, Maui’s tranquil settings and skilled practitioners create an idyllic space for relaxation and healing, leaving you refreshed and revitalized.
Wellness Spots on Maui:
Learn to Hula
There is no better place to learn to Hula than on Maui! Hula dates back to the original Hawaiians, who settled on the islands hundreds of years ago.
East Maui: Hana and Kipahulu
Hana is magical! You will 100% want to add the Road to Hana to your Maui bucket list!
The historic town of Hana is hands down our favorite place on Maui. You could spend days exploring Hana’s long stretches of greenery, massive waterfalls, untouched coastline, bamboo forest, and some of the world’s most stunning beaches.
The Road to Hana can be quite challenging, especially for those who feel sick due to the heavily winding roads. Michael and I have driven the windy Highway 1 in California multiple times, and we still felt a bit on edge (literally) on parts of the road to Hana.
You will feel much more comfortable being driven by a local who has driven the Road to Hana 1000s times.
Aunty Sandys Banana Bread Stand
Aunty Sandy began making her famous Banana bread in 1983 and has been featured in hundreds of publications and TV shows since! It’s always our first and last stop on the Road to Hana.
The Banana bread comes fresh out of the oven and into your hands. It’s the perfect treat for your long drive on the Road to Hana!
Upper Waikani Falls
Upper Waikani Falls is also known as the Three Bears for the trio of waterfalls. This was one of our favorite stops on the Road to Hana.
You can admire the falls from the top or hike down to swim under them. Please note that these falls are a bit more difficult to get to.
It is recommended that you wear Tevas or other supportive footwear. Trust me on this. We made the mistake of wearing no-gripped sandals and came close to slipping a few times.
But the difficult trek down was 100% worth it. We packed a light lunch and swam for a few hours.
Kahanu Gardens
The Kahanu Gardens is in one of Maui’s largest native Hala forests. Here, you will find plant collections valued by the local Hawaiian culture.
The gardens offer a 2-hour guided tour of the land. Guides will walk the gardens with you and give you an overview of what the traditional plants are used for.
Pipiwai Trail Hike through Bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls
The Pipiwai Trail is one of Hana’s most popular hiking trails and is considered one of the best things to do along the Road to Hana!
This Hana hike is a 4-mile round trip from a bamboo forest to the massive Waimoku Falls.
Other blogs mentioned that the first part of the hiking trail is difficult. We would rate this trail easy to medium difficulty. We could see this hiking trail being more difficult when it is muddier. Overall, we were sweatier from the high humidity than the hike intensity.
The entire hike takes around 2-3 hours. Wear appropriate footwear, as the trail can become quite muddy after a big rain.

Rappel Down A Maui Waterfall
Rappel down Maui’s waterfalls and cliffs on this small-group Hana Excursion.
You will start with an easy waterfall and then work up to a more difficult 30-ft (9-meter) waterfall.
We love this tour because you can see Maui waterfalls up close- first with a rappel down and then with a swim! The tour only allows up to 8 guests, making it a more personal experience.
Red Sand Beach
Hana’s Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu Beach) is a small “hidden” beach in Kaihaululu Bay.
The trail to Red Sand Beach is about a 10-minute hike. It is very narrow and steep, but we promise it is one of the best beaches to stop at along your Road to Hana excursion.
- Get there early, as parking around this area fills up fast.
- Do not block traffic or entrances. You will get a parking ticket.
- Wear hiking shoes or another type of tennis shoes. We explored the entire island in our favorite Tevas.
Wai’anapanapa State Park Black Sand Beach
No trip to Hana, Maui, is complete without a visit to Wai’anapanapa State Park, also known as Pa’iloa Beach. The beach is made up of Volcanic lava fragments.
To preserve this beach, the Wai’anapanapa State Park now requires reservations.
If you visit the black sand beach as part of a tour, the tour company will secure permits for you.
Helicopter Tour
If you ever have the opportunity to take a helicopter tour in Maui, DO IT! The aerial views are absolutely spectacular.
The best helicopter tours in Maui circle (or land!) in Hana.
Check out the Oceanfront Landing 75-Minute Helicopter Tour! This helicopter tour will fly over hidden waterfalls and the lush rainforests of Maui and Molokai, followed by a waterfront landing!

Visit the Pools of ‘Ohe’o
The Pools of ‘Ohe’o (pronounced Oh-Hey-Oh) are also known as the Seven Sacred Pools. They are a must-stop on your Road to Hana Itinerary.
The Pools of ‘Ohe’o consist of about 20 naturally formed swimmable pools along the Palikea stream, with mini waterfalls plunging from one pool to the next.
We love the Pools of ‘Ohe’o (or seven sacred pools) because rainforests and waterfalls surround them. Pools of ‘Oheo’o are the perfect place to swim in the afternoon or picnic next to a waterfall.
Stop at a local fruit stand
You will see a lot of local fruit stands along the Road to Hana.
Some fruit stands along Hana Highway on Maui operate on an honor system. This means you take what fruit you want from the stand and add money to the money box. Respect the locals, and do not steal.
Walk through a Lava Tube at Hana Lava Tube
Add the Ka’eleku Cavern to your Road to Hana bucket list!
This is a self-guided Maui cave tour, so you can explore the tubes at your own pace.
Flashlights are provided in the Entrance Fee. Be sure to have cash on hand for the entrance fee.
This Lava Tube tour is an excellent option for those who want private transportation to explore the Bamboo Forest, Kaeleku Caverns (lava tubes), Upper Waikani Falls, and the Wai’anapanapa State Park (black sand beach).
South Maui: Wailea, Kihei and Maalaea
Local Grinds at the Kihei Food Trucks
The Kihei food trucks on Maui are a fantastic way to experience local grinds.
Food trucks have all the island’s best local food, from fish tacos to poke and shaved ice.
Check out the Kihei Food Truck Park. The park features several local food trucks, picnic tables, and lawn games.
Learn to Surf
If you are looking for one of the best things to do in Kihei Maui, we recommend taking an island surf lesson!
This Small Group Surf Lesson in Kihei is perfect for beginners (adults or kids) who want to learn to surf for the first time.
If you are staying in Lahaina or other parts of West Maui island, look at this surf lesson.
Drink the famous Mai Thai at Monkey Pod.

Why Monkeypod? This delicious island rum cocktail is made with house-made macadamia nut orgeat syrup and topped with lilikoi (passion fruit) foam- you’ll be dreaming about this Mai Thai long after you leave the island!
Stand-Up Paddle Board Tour
Stand-up paddle board (aka SUP) is one of the best things to do in Maui!
You can rent paddle boards from most local shops in Kihei and ka’anapali and paddle them out on your own. But for a more elevated experience, we highly recommend this paddle board tour.
The Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Tour is a unique way to spend a day learning about the ancient geology and the natural history of the island while paddling one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines in the world.
You also get a free digital photo package to share with family and friends at the end!
Indulge in the Best Fish Tacos
If you’re looking for the best tacos on Maui, look no further than South Maui Fish Company!

Another popular fish taco spot is Coconuts Fish Tacos. Coconuts Fish Tacos is a casual seafood spot is located in Kihei in a small strip mall, but don’t let the location fool you-they’re amazing! If you want to skip the lines, you can order ahead and enjoy your meal on the sandy beach across the street.
Learn to weave a Hawaiian Lei
When I moved to Maui, I pictured getting off the plane and being treated with a traditional island lei (like in the movies!)
But that wasn’t the case.
As tourism grew, the act of free lei greeting at Kahului airport in Maui became far and free between.
Or better yet, take a Free traditional lei-making lesson!

Lei Weaving Recommendations:
Explore lava Rock at Ahihi Kinau
The Ahihi Kinau Natural Reserve is one of our favorite spots on the island. It is completely covered in white coral and black lava rock formations.
You will see acres and acres of dormant lava fields! It looks like a scene right out of a movie.
We recommend taking the Hoapili Trailhead along the Ahihi Kinau Natural Reserve beach.
To get there, you take Makena Alanui south to the very end of the road. The parking is a dirt lot just past the Makenda Horse stables on the right-hand side.
Shop Suvinors at the ABC Store
The ABC store is great for picking up all your Maui Souvenirs. They have everything from beach coverups and Island Princess Maui Chocolate-covered Macadamia nuts to wood island snacks and cosmetics.
Be sure to pick our favorite: the Guava Hot Sauce by Maui HI Spice! It’s so good that we have boxes shipped to the family every year.
Maui Ocean Center
The Maui Ocean Center is one of the best things kids and adults alike can do in Maui. At the Maui Ocean Center, you can explore Hawaii’s marine life from the center’s underwater aquarium and interactive exhibits. This is a great experience to escape a rainy Maui day.

You will also likely spot sea turtles and other marine life!
Hawaiian Outrigger Recommendations:

Wailea Golf Resort
Who doesn’t want to golf on a pristine Wailea golf course overlooking the crystal blue water?
While many great golf courses are on Maui, The Wailea Courses are some of the island’s best.
There are three courses at the Wailea Golf Resort: Wailea Gold, Blue, and Emerald.
The views from these golf courses do not disappoint!
Maui Brew Co
If you’re looking for things to do in Maui at night, look no further than Maui Brewing. Maui Brewing has daily live music in a large outdoor beer garden!
We had so many fun nights here with our friends, listening to live music and sipping the incredible selection of craft beer.
If you don’t love beer, don’t worry; you can still enjoy my favorite, the POG Maui Brewing Seltzer (POG = Pasion Fruit, Orange & Guava), or one of their other specialty cocktails.
Bingo or Trivia Night at Moose McGillycuddys Pub
Bingo on Monday? Trivia on Wednesday? Yes, please!
Moose McGillycudy Pub is one of the best things to do in Maui at night. The pub’s atmosphere is always buzzing with energy from Maui locals and tourists.
Experience the Maui Bar scene in Kihei Triangle
The Kihei Triangle (also known as The BARmuda Triangle) is one of the most popular things to do on Maui after the sun goes down.
This lively area of Maui has everything from dive bars with pool tables to happy hours and live music.
Our favorites are Three’s Bar (great for happy hour, Haui’s Life A Beach for a pool game, What Ale’s You to have a beer and watch a sports game, and Vibe Bar for live music.
Book a day at one of Wailea’s resorts
If you haven’t heard of Resort Pass, you are missing out. With Resort Pass, you can book a day at one of the top resorts on Maui without breaking the bank.
Michael and I have used this app all over the world!
Be sure to book your pool pass or day bed ahead of time, as most Maui hotels only release a few openings through the app at a time.
Attend a nude beach
Little Beach (near Big Beach) is an unofficial clothing-optional secluded piece of Paradise in Makena Beach State Park on the South Maui shore.
If you want to swim naked or even out tan lines on the warm Maui sand, this is the spot for you!
During the day, this beach is quiet and relaxing, with the exception of Saturday and Sunday, when it is packed with parties and drum circle performances.
How to get to Little Beach (from Big Beach): Pay and Park at Makena Beach State Park. When you reach the sand, go right. You’ll see a cliff path at the far right end of Big Beach. Climb up the small rock formation on the far end of Big Beach and down the other side.
Snorkel in a Volcano
It’s true, you can snorkel in a volcano! Well… a submerged volcano
The Molokini crater is a tiny crescent moon-shaped island offshore of the dormant Haleakala Volcano.
Don’t worry, though. This volcano is dormant. The last time Molokini erupted was over 200,000 years ago!
Here are the Top 2 Snorkel Tours to Molokini Crater:
To snorkel in this below-water volcano, you must book a boat tour to the Molokini Crater.

You can order Leoda’s for pickup and enjoy your delicious slice of pie on the beach! If there’s a long wait, check out the local open-air fruit market and juice stand next door.
Explore Front Street
Lahaina’s famed front street had endless art galleries, boutique shopping, and incredible restaurants! Our absolute favorite restaurant in Lahaina (& all of Maui) is Star Noodle.
Update: Front Street was damaged in the fires. Star Noodle has reopened at new location at 1287 Front St.
Snorkel Honolua Bay
Honolua Bay is just north of Kapalua on the West side of Maui and is the perfect place to snorkel. There are so many sea turtles at Honolua Bay.
Take the small, lush forest path to the Bay. The beach is rocky, so bring water shoes and snorkel fins.
Nakalele Blowhole
The Nakalele blowhole is always listed as one of the best things to do on Maui.
If you are staying on the West Side of Maui, then the Nakale Blowhole is worth a visit! The Nakalele blowhole is located in the West of Maui (~30 minutes from Ka’anapali Beach).

Click here for the updated Ukulele schedule!
Lahaina Music will provide ukuleles and professional instruction.
Spend a day at Napili Beach or Kaanapali Beach
Napili Beach and Kaanapali Beach are 2 of the island’s best beaches on Maui!
Napili Beach is a smaller, more protected bay perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or lounging on the golden soft sand. We recommend getting to the beach early, as the bay is small and fills up by mid-morning.
Ka’anapali Beach is about a 15-minute drive west of Napili. Ka’anapali Beach is a 3-mile-long sandy beach that lines Maui’s most luxurious hotels.
Ka’anapali Beach is also known for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving! For the more adventurous, you can cliff jump at Black Rock!
Humpback Whales often swim near Napili and Ka’anapali beaches during whale season!
Retail Therapy at Whalers Village
Spending the afternoon at Whalers Village offers a delightful blend of shopping, dining, and oceanfront relaxation. Located in the heart of Kaanapali, this open-air shopping center boasts a vibrant atmosphere with boutiques showcasing local artisans and well-known brands. After browsing the shops, you can savor a meal at one of the waterfront restaurants, enjoying fresh seafood with a view.
For those seeking adventure, water activities like snorkeling or whale-watching tours depart from nearby.
Sunset Dinner Sail
A sunset sailing adventure is the perfect romantic date on Maui Hawaii!
Sailing tours on Maui include a delicious dinner, drinks, and incredible up-close views of dolphins and sometimes even whales!
Our friends visited us on Maui and booked this open bar sunset sailing tour. We had the absolute best time!
Ghost Walk
After moving to Maui, we quickly learned of the Maui Nighmarchers.
Locals on Maui say that if you hear faint drumming or chanting in the early morning hours, especially near an old battleground or other sacred places, it’s a sign that dangerous Nighmarchers have awakened.
In Hawaiian mythology, Nighmarchers are ghosts of ancient warriors of Hawaii. They are believed to arise from the dead on certain nights of the year and drum or chant their way to sacred spots around Hawaii.
You do not want to come in contact with a Maui Nightmarcher as it is believed they carry dangerous weapons, and any mortal that comes in contact with one will die a violent death.
Lanai Snorkel and Dolphin Adventure
Take a small boat ride to the island of Lanai, stopping at three snorkel spots along the way. You will explore stunning coral reefs and tons of underwater marine life. And best of all, you are almost always guaranteed to see dolphins!
Be aware that this boat is sometimes small, fast, and bumpy. To avoid getting seasick, purchase this sea sickness medicine or take another snorkel and dolphin adventure tour on a larger vessel.
Top-rated child-friendly dolphin tour:
North Shore: Paia, Haiku and Hullo
Live Music at Paia Bay Coffee Bar
This “hidden” little coffee spot is a Maui favorite!
Enjoy coffee or a cocktail in an open-air courtyard while listening to local Hawaiian live music.
The acai bowl and the banana bread are incredible! You can also stop here on your Road to Hana adventure and place an order to go.
Lunch at Paia Fish Market
Paia Fish Market is a Maui staple! Although it has locations all over Maui now, the original is located in, you guessed it… Paia.
The fish is super fresh, and you can prepare it any way you want. The Cajun style is the best!
Visit the Turtles Ho’okipa Beach Park
Ho’okipa Beach Park is an excellent stop on Maui’s north shore to watch sunsets, surfers, and windsurfers! The beach is also well known as the “Turtle Town” of Paia, as you are almost always guaranteed to see turtles sleeping on shore.
Please note that this Ho’okipa beach is not recommended for swimming.
Mamas Fish House
The world-famous Mama’s Fish House, located on the North Shore of Maui in Paia, serves up the best local fish dishes on the island!
Every day, Mama’s Fish House fishermen go out on boats to catch various fish, including mahi-mahi, ono, and ahi.
Be sure to let them know if you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion! Michael and I celebrated our anniversary at Mama’s Fish House, and the staff made it super special with an incredible dessert and a thoughtful handwritten card.
Upcountry Maui: Kula, Haleakala, Makawao, Pukalani
We think Upcountry Maui is severely underrated. There are many fun things to explore above sea level on the island. Break away from Maui’s breathtaking coastline and venture upcountry for the day to explore this list of Maui attractions.
Haleakala Sunrise or Sunset
Haleakala National Park is one of the most popular things to do in Maui. Located in Upcountry Maui, Haleakala is a 10,023-foot tall volcano.
There are a few ways to see Haleakala National Park, but the most popular is to watch the sunrise or sunset from the summit.
For those seeking more unusual things to do in Maui, you can hike the Haleakala volcano or bike 27 miles down.
You can opt to see Haleakala without a tour. Just note that you will need a reservation for Sunrise. Reservations can be made online up to 60 days in advance.
Maui Pineapple tour
If you have had Maui Gold Pineapples, you already know how amazing they are! Head upcountry to the historic plantation town of Hali’imaile for the best Maui Hawaii pineapple farm tour!
This highly-rated pineapple tour teaches how pineapples are farmed and lets you sample freshly picked ones. Best of all, the tour sends you home with an “airport” island pineapple.
However, if you are like us, you’ll probably eat the pineapple before your trip ends.
Goat Yoga
Yes, you read that correctly- Maui: Goat Yoga!
Sitting about 3,000 feet above sea level in upcountry Maui, you will find yoga classes with miniature goats. This class was definitely on our Maui bucket list!
Who doesn’t want to work out while cuddling with the most adorable miniature goats?
Check out the option to book a sunset goat yoga with live music! These classes are always booked, so be sure to make reservations early.
Ali’i Kula Lavender
If you plan a trip to Maui, Hawaii, between mid-June and early July, consider stopping at Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm on your upcountry adventure.
You can spend an afternoon walking through the beautiful gardens and shopping for lavender gifts in the gift shop. The Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm is the perfect spot to enjoy an afternoon walk and pick up local lavender souvenirs for your family back home.
Visit Ocean Vodka
Ocean Vodka’s beautifully designed crystal blue bottle is hard to miss when scanning the shelves at your local liquor store.
But did you know that Ocean Vodka also has an 80-acre organic farm and distillery on Maui?
The farm-to-table food and cocktails are excellent, and we promise that you won’t be disappointed with the panoramic views of the dormant volcano and Maui’s breathtaking coastline!
Hike the crater at Haleakala National Park
The Volcano Crater offers countless spectacular views throughout the Haleakala National Park.
Michael and I opted for a Sunset Tour! The views are unreal.
Tip: If you are not joining a tour, check the Haleakala National Park website for hours, permits, and other helpful trip-planning information.
Maui Wines
Did you know that there is wine tasting on Maui?
The Maui wine estate began in 1974 and was well known as a mountain retreat for the last reigning king of Maui, King Kalākaua.
You can sip the famous sparkling pineapple wine in the Kings Cottage Tasting Room or the Old Jail.
Maui Wine will also set up tastings for private events (engagements, birthdays, etc.) in other property areas.
Make reservations in advance, as they don’t always take walk-ins during the busy season.
Central Maui
Hike The West Maui Mountains
Did you know that the Maui Mountains used to be a Volcano named Mauna Kahalawai? It is no longer active but is now known as The West Maui Mountains.
There are a ton of really great hiking trails in the Maui mountains!
Our favorite hiking trails in the West Maui mountains are:
- Iao Valley Trails: We love all the Iao Valley State Park hikes! Check out the Iao Valley State Monument and the Iao Needle hike. (Note: the Iao Needle hike is sometimes closed due to weather. Check the state park website for current access.)
- Waihe’e Ridge Trail: This trail is located in the Maui Forest Reserve. The Waihee Ridge Trail on Maui is no walk in the park—it’s a 4-mile round trip perfect for those seeking a challenge. This hike takes you along the ridge into the West Maui Mountains, offering jaw-dropping views all the way up.
Maui is truly a piece of paradise. Whether you’re a fan of adventure or simply looking for some rest and relaxation, Maui has something to offer everyone. We hope this list provides helpful information to help you plan your next Hawaiian vacation! Please consider sharing the Best Things To Do In Maui post with a friend.
FAQs
What should I skip on Maui?
We get this question a lot. While Maui is an incredible place to visit, there are times that I would recommend skipping certain activities on the island.
- Skip snorkeling or any swimming sport after a massive rain or storm. Sharks love to feed off the storm run-off from the Maui Mountains and the Haleakala Volcano.
- Whale-watching is best between January and March, so I recommend booking a tour. If you go during June or July, I recommend skipping whale-watching tours and opting for general sailing or other water activities.
How many days on Maui is enough?
The answer to this question depends on what activities you want to see while on Maui. A few days should do the trick if you just want to stay at a top Hawaii resort and lie by a pool. But if you want to explore the whole island, I’d recommend 8-10 days.
This post is all about the best things to do in Maui.
